about me

autobiography in brief

I’ve been doing “serious photography” since childhood, when I had my own basement darkroom • for me, the challenge & reward of color photography is in rendering true-to-life skin tones and an often-magical sense of light and animation • my goal is to see and compose images in color that are highly expressive and true-to-life, and that are also true to classic photographic and artistic values

In 2008, I’m doing a group show, the artist project, at the merchandise mart in chicago, april 25 - 28

praise & comments

“hi brad, the pics of gigi are so beautiful • you so capture her • thanks again” — rod

“I must compliment you on the picture of me in particular, because I just don’t like pictures of myself as a general rule, and I feel like you captured me in a way that looks like how I see myself (in a good way)” — hans

at a recent exhibition of my work, a man asked me in broken english about the picture at right • after I translated and explained the sign, my visitor mumbled something and walked away • later, I found a message (see pic below right), written on toilet paper, sitting next to my business cards • my russian friend val helped me read it:

“[my wife and] I don't have weed • do you want to smoke now? • I will meet harvey --------”

occasionally I like to check out possible photos using my “handy frame” (see drawing) • an old guy came up to me one time when I was doing that and asked me “is there film in that?” I had to think for a moment about that one • then I answered “no, it's digital”
